Flood Issue Update

The scheme to provide flood alleviation for the Thames from Datchet to Teddington, the Lower Thames Strategy (LTS), is still progressing slowly with the support of DEFRA but with the current financial constraints it is unlkely to be completed for many years. However, some of the enviromental impact studies are still being undertaken. The flood alleviation scheme for the River Bourne in Chertsey has been subsumed into the LTS so we are unlikely to have any practical help to prevent flooding in the centre of the town for a least a generation. The Runnymede Flood Forum still meets annually under the Chairmanship of Cllr Derek Cotty and will next meet on Tuesday 20th September 2011at 18.30 in the Committee Room at the RBC Civic Centre in Addlestone.

As set-out in the Government’s Flood and Water Management Act 2010, as of April 2011, Local Authorities became responsible for managing the risk of local floods (groundwater, surface water and ordinary water course flooding). One of the aims of KYFR is to support the public sector and they have developed a new Flood Guide providing free practical guidance for local residents, including advice on how to prepare for a flood and a template for homeowners to build their own personal flood plan. KYFR can tailor a version with Councils own logo, personal welcome and contact details for their own use to proactively help educate their local area.
